A test for usability

I reckon WordPress is pretty good to use as a blogging platform, but want to test image captions…

Dunno if you'll see this alt text

Are you even reading *this* caption?

I’ve also started a posterous blog

In case you hadn’t noticed, I haven’t been using this blog much lately; Twitter (@joffaboy) seems more intuitive, and has a work value too.

I doubt that I’ll be changing anytime soon, but you never know….

50000 Aussies & only one Spencer

Well Spencer Tunic’s at it again, this time on the Opera House steps. What an amazing sight it must have been. To think all of those people & all of that organisation and he only used what seemed to be a tiny 35mm camera! Hope he took some ‘safety’ shots.

Isn’t it ironic that the man whose shtick is naked people has two items of clothing for a name?

Mandelbrot Fractal Set Trip To e214 HD from teamfresh on Vimeo.

The final magnification is e.214. Want some perspective? a magnification of e.12 would increase the size of a particle to the same as the earths orbit! e.21 would make a particle look the same size as the milky way and e.42 would be equal to the universe. This zoom smashes all of them all away. If you were “actually” traveling into the fractal your speed would be faster than the speed of light.

Holidazed & Confused

bibledisclaimerYes, it’s that time of the year again. Rampant commercialism and sentimentality marketed as feelgood commercialism and rampant sentimentality.

People go on about some Aramaic Jew from a couple of thousand years (and a billion tears) ago and forget that there’s more to life than thinking about the afterlife …

I think that’s a bit like only being concerned about what happens at the after party and missing out on complaining about the main event!

For film addicts

Film Addict takes the top 250 films on IMDB and quizzes you on how many you’ve seen. I managed to tick perhaps 70% of the titles (guessing on a couple) before my net connection died… I guess this is the sign of either

  • a misspent youth & early/mid adultery orToday's message brought to you by Coffee
  • too many video hires & latenight TV sessions ….
    or then again, perhaps
  • a sign I studied Cinema at uni & misspent my best years of learning….

What do you reckon?

Real annoying
Not all University of Oxford researchers are uptight and humorless, “irregardless” of what you might think. In fact, a bunch of them compiled a list of the Top 10 Most Irritating Expressions in the English language — just because we needed one. Though maybe “you could care less,” the scholars in question keep track of linguistic mangling and overused buzzwords in a database called the Oxford University Corpus. The voluminous record keeps track of books, magazines, broadcast, online media and other sources, watching for new overused, tiresome phrases and retiring those that fade from use (or misuse).

The great hierarchy of verbal fatigue includes:

1 – At the end of the day
2 – Fairly unique
3 – I personally
4 – At this moment in time
5 – With all due respect
6 – Absolutely
7 – It’s a nightmare
8 – Shouldn’t of
9 – 24/7
10 – It’s not rocket science

Real Science

Scientists in Australia are going to transfer intestinal bacteria of kangaroos into cattle and see what happens.  Cow farts contain methane, a greenhouse gas. Kangaroo farts do not. So scientists in Australia are going to transfer intestinal bacteria of kangaroos into cattle and see what happens. According to the government of Queensland, almost 14% of all greenhouse gas emissions from Australia come from cow farts, so this seemingly silly idea could actually make a big difference.

This, That, and the Other

An excellent & insightful posting by Mark Pesce:

Eleven million years of evolution, back to Proconsul, the ancestor of all the hominids, have crafted us into quintessentially social creatures. We are human to the degree we are in relationship with our peers.

He argues having 1200 Twitter ‘friends’ is crazy, but an essential, C21 sort of human craziness.. I’ve just added myself to his Twitter list (so that’s “1201″).

Somewhere in the last few months, half the population of the planet became mobile telephone subscribers.

Last year we sent forty three billion text messages.

If text is being replaced by Twitter et al for hyperconnecting us, ! wonder what’ll come after Twitter?

Want to copy every bookmark to you clipboard for a quick backup? Do the same thing on the Organize Bookmarks entry. When you paste your bookmarks, each URL is organized by folder name.
  • Simple big file sharing online: uSend.io Click to choose a file, enter emails separated by commas, and your recipients get a link to your file (also with a 100MB limit). No ads on the download page, no wait times, just shared files. http://usend.io/
